We were recently contacted by a Travel Guide NEW MEXICO reader and watcher looking for suggestions about non-skiing activities in Angel Fire, New Mexico. We have a few recommendations and wanted to share them with everyone:

El Monte Sagrado (www.elmontesagrado.com) is an incredible spa in Taos (there are none in Angel Fire) and about a 30-40 minute drive from Angel Fire. They have overnight accommodations, day spa and a great restaurant. We have visited many spas in the state and I would put this one at the top of our list. It is a great place to go and be pampered.

Angel Fire Excursions offers snow mobile tours through Kit Carson National Forest. The folks at AFE are great folks and are terrific working with those who may not have been on a snow mobile before. We have been through Kit Carson and it is a wonderful forest. Lots of wildlife in the winter including Elk … and if you’re lucky you might spot a bear or two!

Road Runner Tours offers winter horseback riding, sleigh rides and dinner sleigh rides, too. These folks have been doing tours for over 25 years and are wonderful people … and a lot of fun to be with/around.

Enchanted Circle: This is one of the State’s scenic byways that goes up to Red River (shopping, etc.) and Taos and loops back to Angel Fire. It is a beautiful drive and depending upon the time of winter you go it is an easy drive. Be careful if there has been a lot of snow. Views are spectacular through the mountains and Red River is another of those fun places to visit.

Shopping: Angel Fire has some great shops and art galleries. The town is small enough that you can park your car just about anywhere and walk Main Street. There is great shopping, too, in both Taos and Red River. Again … both an easy drive from Angel Fire.

We recommend a stop at the Angel Fire Convention and Visitors Bureau, on the far end of Main Street — they have lots of information and can help you with reservations and ideas for additional non-skiing opportunities.

A few last thoughts … make sure you treat yourselves to dinner at the Roasted Clove, which is near the Resort at Angel Fire. It is one of the finest restaurants we’ve eaten in while touring the state. Everything from incredible burgers to great steaks and sea food. You won’t go wrong. I think Monday night is their special burger night. Well worth checking out.

We also recommend that you get into your car at dusk or just around dawn and drive up the mountain. The roads are paved and clear of snow (99% of the time). If you want to see Elk you’re almost a shoe-in for great pictures. Lots of “critters” around and on the mountain.

The Memorial was established in 1968 by Victor and Jeanne Westphall to honor their son, Lt. David Westphall, who was killed in Vietnam in May 1968. When it opened in 1971, it was one of the first Memorials of its kind in the United States dedicated to Vietnam Veterans. Until recently, it was funded and maintained by the David Westphall Veterans Foundation. The Memorial was formally transferred to New Mexico State Parks in 2005, making it the state’s 33rd park.

Now it is the only state park in the U.S. dedicated solely as a Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial provides veterans, and those who honor them, a refuge in which to reflect and heal. A representative from the Department of Veterans Services is present to offer assistance to veterans who require or request it. The 6,000 square foot visitor center/museum houses exhibits, videos and memorabilia. Veterans can use on-site computers to locate friends or loved ones.

Tours are available, with advance notice by calling ahead, for schools and other groups wishing to learn more. Since its inception in 1968, it is estimated that there have been more than 2.5 million visitors. In fact, there are between 70,000 and 80,000 visitors each year. Vietnam Veterans Memorial State Park is located in Angel Fire, 30 miles east from Taos on US 64.

Legend has it this spot historically roamed by the Ute Indians is named for the “angel fire” that lights the high peaks at sunrise and sunset. Everyone who comes to this spectacular high mountain village is sure to be charmed by the setting and the scenery. Set at the base of New Mexico’s highest mountain, Wheeler Peak, tourism is Angel Fire’s #1 offering. Angel Fire provides countless year-round tourist activities.

Winter sports enthusiasts revel in the powder. Numerous snow activities for the whole family abound on the slopes of Angel Fire Resort. Summer is not to be discounted, though, as there are fabulous outdoor activities available as well. A PGA rated golf course, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking are just a few of the many options. Angel Fire Chamber Music Festival is only one of the numerous special event offerings here and the Vietnam Veterans National Memorial is an absolute must-do. “Relax, unwind, unplug, recharge, refresh, come up for air” — Angel Fire, New Mexico is a destination with unlimited possibilities.

If you want to get away, Angel Fire is a great place to play. Pack large, bring lots of gear, and don’t forget the toys.

Angel Fire is a tranquil, year-round resort smack dab in the middle of wooded wilderness and a high mountain valley. The Wheeler Peak range, New Mexico’s highest, is outside your front door. And of course, we all feel it’s one of the nicest places on the planet. Angel Fire’s #1 industry is tourism, with our tranquil mountain community attracting thousands year round. Winter brings snow sport fans to have fun skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling or sledding, while our cool summers attract golfers, fishermen (and fisherwomen), hikers, mountain bikers, horseback riders, 4-wheelers, and families just wanting to get away from the heat and hectic pace of city life. If you’re talking pure Angel Fire, you’re talking pure moments.
